Acai: The New Superfood

The press is literally freaking out over an obscure little purple fruit with a strange name: Açaí (pronounced as in ah-sigh-ee).

To give just one example: Oprah's Dr. Nicholas Perricone has listed it NO.1 in his list of Top Ten Superfoods! He calls it "one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world" and "nature's perfect energy fruit".

Harvested from the deep rainforests of the mystical Brazilian Amazon, the delicious Açaí fruit was pretty much unheard of by the rest of the world until a few years ago. But it turns out that Acai has been pulped and chugged in vast quantities by generations of traditional Brazilian populations. In some places it has constituted up to a staggering 42% of their diet! (source - Wikipedia). Therefore although Acai is a brand new food to us, it has truly been tried and tested for a long time.

The media is going crazy about the Acai berry. And as a result of the buzz, demand for Acai has skyrocketed. But why, exactly, is everyone going ballistic about this humble fruit?

Acai and nutrition

Acai is one of the most recent members to have been welcomed into the elite club known as superfoods - foods with incredible nutritional profiles and high concentrations of substances reported to be wonderfully good for health.

According to Dr. Perricone and other reputable sources, Acai contains incredible amounts of antioxidants (ten times more than red grapes) and anthocyanins. It also contains good amounts of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber, trace minerals and phytosterols. It also has an almost perfect essential amino acid profile and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid.

Many health benefits have been claimed regarding the Acai berry - notably: increase in sustained energy, help with healthy cholesterol management, improvement of digestive system, and strengthening of the immune system. Other benefits that have been attributed to anthocyanins include reduced risk / prevention of: cancer, premature aging, diabetes, heart and vascular disease, chronic inflammation, high blood cholesterol, Alzheimer's disease, bacterial infections, stroke, and age-related visual deterioration.
